An insider reportedly told In Touch that the couple "tried couples counseling, which worked for a while." However, it didn't seem to have worked that well, and they soon "went back to the way they were."
It's not entirely certain what the problems in the marriage were, although it's believed that their rumored $22M debt may have played some part in it. Other reports claim that the NFL star was having a hard time dealing with the Dukes of Hazzard actress's "mood swings" and alleged obsession with her appearance.
"Eric has had it with her crazy mood swings," an insider told Life & Style back in October, adding: "He's been very vocal about how difficult it is to live with someone so obsessed with surgery and so detached from reality most of the time."
The "Irresistible" singer also wasn't happy either, with the source saying at the time: "Jessica feels like their marriage has lost its romance. Everyone's wondering how long they can go on like this."

The source continued to spill details about the alleged problems in Jessica and Eric's relationship, and confessed: "They don't spend nearly as much time together as they used to. The spark is just gone."
"Lately, Jessica has been reevaluating her happiness, her marriage and her business empire. She is ready to start fresh," the insider concluded, which seems to echo what a separate insider recently revealed.
Apparently both Jessica and Eric have very different goals and aspirations in life, which seems like it could have continued to them spending lots of time apart and ultimately wanting to go their separate ways. "They are different people. Jessica is motivated and Eric isn't. They have different goals," the source spilled.
