You’ve likely heard of the top contenders, like vitamin D and magnesium, but have you ever heard of people taking lion’s mane? Lion’s mane is a type of mushroom that earned its name from its fuzzy, fluffy appearance. While they don’t look edible due to their quirky appearance, many have found that they can be taken as a healthy supplement, by taking them in tablets or nutritional powders.

Lion’s mane is very well known for the way it can strengthen your brain health over time, so it’s had a boost in popularity. We spoke with health experts about what happens when you start taking lion’s mane supplements and the effects you may begin to feel after taking them routinely for two weeks. Your Memory And Cognitive Function May Improve

One of the main reasons why people begin taking lion's mane supplements is the wonderful effects it can have on people's brains.

 

According to Dr. Ryan Sultan, MD, one of the ways lion's mane works towards improving your brain health and its functions is by "gradually promoting neurogenesis and nerve repair."

 

"It increases nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis," he explains.

 

"NGFs play a crucial role in the growth, maintenance, and survival of certain neurons, the cells that allow your brain to function, especially those cells involved in learning, memory, and pain perception. In the context of therapy, NGFs enhance synaptic plasticity, helping the brain adapt and process new information or ways of thinking."

 

Dr. Sultan also notes that after two weeks, those taking the supplement might experience mild cognitive enhancement that can continue to increase as they take it consistently.

You May Experience Less Inflammation

In addition to its properties that help out your brain, lion's mane can also help decrease inflammation in your body over time. Nurse practitioner Cris Amato notes that when the mushroom is included in people's regimen and diets, over time, they can experience "reduced inflammation."

 

She also explains that their "root structure comprises Erinacines that stimulate the production of neurogrowth factor, contributing positively to mood, anxiety, and pain management."

 

"These compounds have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, enhancing their effectiveness," she added.

 

Health experts suggested taking lion's mane as a healthy addition to a balanced diet and lifestyle; however, they noted that those who may be on blood thinners, antidepressants, or diabetes medications should speak with their doctor before taking it routinely.
