The film chronicles the events that lead to the 2016 Panama Papers incident following the fictional character Ellen Martin, who is played by Streep. Martin is a widow that "investigates insurance fraud, chasing leads to a pair of Panama City law partners exploiting the world's financial system," according to IMDB.
Martin's discoveries bring her to the group of journalists that uncovered the Panama Papers, which are the documents that expose the long list of companies that established offshore shell companies in order to avoid paying billions of dollars in taxes.
Streep stars alongside Antonio Banderas and Gary Oldman, who play Ramón Fonseca and Jürgen Mossack, the real-life lawyers at the center of the scandal. The film's cast also includes Jeffrey Wright, Sharon Stone, Robert Patrick, David Schwimmer, and Matthias Schoenaert.
