With the upcoming public opening of the Obama Presidential Center (OPC) in Chicago’s Jackson Park on June 19, 2026, coinciding with Juneteenth celebrations, Michelle Obama is taking a look back at one of the most memorable aspects of her time in the White House: her fashion.
Ahead of the center’s debut, the former First Lady launched a new social media series that explores both her signature style and the initiatives she championed during her years as First Lady alongside Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017.

Michelle Obama To Display Her White House-Era Clothes At The OPC
The series begins with two videos, including one titled Beauty Belongs to Everyone, in which Obama reflects on several dresses and gowns now featured in a museum exhibit dedicated to her White House years. In the video, she explains that every outfit she wore was chosen with intention and purpose.
"I learned early on that the clothes I wore in the White House would never be seen as just clothes," she said. "I had to be very intentional. With the help of my talented team, I considered every choice—the designer, the color, the silhouette, the style—before I set foot in public."
The mom of two explained that she viewed fashion as an opportunity to tell a larger story about representation and inclusivity. "I thought about who I wanted to lift up, who I wanted to see reflected in what I wore, and what story I wanted to tell about who I am and who we are," she said.
She went on to describe the exhibit as more than a showcase of clothing.
"The pieces you'll see at the Obama Presidential Center Museum tell part of that story," Obama shared. "It's a story of style, but it's also a story of purpose, confidence, and how no one gets to prescribe what it means to feel beautiful. We get to choose that for ourselves."

Fans React
Fans quickly responded on social media, praising both her fashion choices and her legacy as First Lady.
"She always looked stylish and classy," one commenter wrote.
Another added, "Beauty, style, grace, and intellect with such intentionality. Thank you for being an example."
Others noted how her wardrobe helped spotlight emerging talent. Throughout her time in the White House, Obama frequently wore designs from lesser-known creators rather than relying exclusively on established luxury fashion houses.

Michelle Obama Reflects On Her First Lady Outfit Choices
The IMO podcast host explained that she intentionally sought out designers from across the country and around the world who had never previously dressed a First Lady.
"I thought they deserved a little light shone on them, too," she said.
Obama also emphasized that many of her fashion choices were rooted in accessibility, often choosing brands and retailers familiar to everyday shoppers.
"You don't need to spend a lot of money to look your best," she noted.
The OPC will officially begin celebrations with an invitation-only dedication ceremony and community watch party on June 18. From June 19 through June 21, the public will be able to attend free open-house festivities across the campus.
While the center's 19.3-acre grounds, outdoor park, playground, and athletic facility are free and open to visitors daily, tickets are required for admission to the museum and must be reserved in advance.
