Miley Cyrus has made it clear that she’s moved on from her Disney Channel days, but the rocker recently admitted to Rolling Stone that Hannah Montana was more than just a character. The 28-year-old star posed on the cover of the music mag topless for their January issue, speaking out in the interview about her new album, Plastic Hearts, and the scary parallels the fan favorite show bore to her actual life.
Cyrus has been open about her struggles with fame and growing up in the spotlight, but she recently reflected on the impact her role on the Disney show had on other celebs as they grew into their identities. She said, “I had to evolve because Hannah was larger than life, larger than me. I felt like I was never going to amount to the success of Hannah Montana...When my peers are having these experiences and accepting themselves because of something that I demonstrated while they were a kid, that’s when I go, 'S—, I f—ing am Hannah Montana.”
While Cyrus grew to fame because of her role on the Disney Channel, she found herself to be closely melded to her superstar alter-ego. She admitted later in the interview, “Really, Hannah Montana was not a character. The concept of the show, it’s me. I’ve had to really come to terms with that and not be third-person about it.” As the role was so closely connected to her real life, Cyrus had difficulty separating her personal successes from those of Hannah Montana, but nevertheless it’s a part she now looks back on fondly.
As for a Hannah Montana reboot, Cyrus alluded that she wouldn’t write it off, admitting that the opportunity to break out the long blonde wig may present itself again. “I definitely would like to resurrect her at some point. She needs a big makeover because she’s kinda stuck in 2008, so we’ll need to go shopping with Miss Montana.” Cyrus says she even hopes she’ll direct a potential reboot!
Growing up in the spotlight can’t be easy, but Cyrus seems to be taking her childhood stardom in stride. The rocker has made it clear she’s evolved from the young Disney star she once was, but it’s sweet to see her recognize the impact she made with her role.
