We have started a new year, and with it new resolutions. The most common goal people set for themselves at the beginning of the year is to lose weight, but unfortunately many of us don’t always go about this the right way. When you are trying to get in better shape, the best thing you can do is take up new exercises. The second best thing is to research a diet that works for you to give your body everything it needs, without overindulging in sugars or fats.

Unfortunately, there is a very common dieting mistake people are making that is actually terrible for your health because it slows down your metabolism and might even cause you to gain weight.

Skipping breakfast might seem like a logical way to lose weight, because in theory, if you skip a meal you are taking in less calories. And breakfast is the easiest meal for many people to skip because most of us are less hungry in the morning than we are in the afternoon and evening.

But this is actually very far from the truth. Skipping breakfast is the worst thing you can do when you are on a diet.

You’ve heard before that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” but this is actually true because it supplies your body with glucose to keep you energized throughout the day and essential nutrients that are best to take in earlier in your morning. When you skip breakfast, you leave your body deprived of what it needs, and it will make up for this throughout the day by craving more food to replenish energy.

Eating a healthy, balanced breakfast speeds up your metabolism and can help you to feel fuller faster with the subsequent meals you eat throughout the day. The best breakfasts incorporate foods from multiple food groups, such as a meal with toast, eggs and yogurt. If you are not one to have a big appetite in the mornings, we suggest you start small. Maybe try a single fried egg, some peanut butter on toast or a cup of yogurt.
