Getting quality sleep and managing stress can become more challenging after 40, largely due to shifting hormones, higher cortisol levels, and changes in the body’s natural sleep cycle. That’s why many women are turning to natural, supportive approaches to help restore balance without relying solely on harsh interventions. According to hormone health experts, certain nutrients and botanicals may help calm the nervous system, improve sleep quality, and support overall well-being as the body ages. Here are three natural options often recommended.

1. Ashwagandha

The most profound benefit, according to Dr. Eric Berg, is stress relief. “If you feel nervous, this is the best herb to take,” he says. Ashwagandha is what’s known as an adaptogen—a natural substance that helps your body cope with stress by balancing the nervous system and hormone levels.

“Ashwagandha has been known to significantly lower cortisol,” Dr. Berg explains. Cortisol is the body’s primary stress hormone, and chronically high levels can lead to anxiety, poor sleep, weight gain, and even insulin resistance.

Stress-induced insomnia is another area where ashwagandha shines. “Because the lowering of cortisol is occurring, you’re going to feel calmer, you’re going to have less anxiety, better brain function, and less brain fog,” Dr. Berg notes.

2. Magnesium

One of the standout benefits of magnesium is its ability to improve sleep quality, which often diminishes with age. "Magnesium has natural calming properties," Dr. Rimas Geiga, MD, notes. "It activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and calmness." By regulating neurotransmitters and influencing melatonin production, magnesium supports healthy sleep-wake cycles, crucial for restorative sleep in older adults.

3. L-Theanine

L-Theanine, an amino acid naturally found in green tea, is another gentle but effective option for promoting relaxation. It’s known for increasing alpha brain wave activity, which is associated with a calm, focused mental state without sedation. Experts note that L-theanine may help reduce nighttime anxiety, quiet racing thoughts, and make it easier to fall asleep—especially when stress is the main barrier to rest.
