The benefits of an improved metabolism are endless. Improved inflammation, weight management, quality sleep, and hormonal balance are just some perks of a healthy metabolism. However, everything we consume and how we live our lifestyle can contribute immensely to the quality of this important system, as not all foods are beneficial in order to maintain an efficient metabolic function.

To find out what the one food you should stay away from if you want an efficient metabolism is, we spoke to Dr. Blen Tesfu, MD, and general practitioner, who told us that highly processed and refined foods are the one thing we should exclude from our diet. Read on to find out more.

Highly Processed And Refined Foods

Tesfu lays out several reasons why highly processed and refined foods are not beneficial for your metabolism. She states, "These foods are often high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and low in essential nutrients. These foods can contribute to weight gain, insulin resistance, inflammation, and other metabolic disturbances when consumed in excess."

Some examples of these foods include processed snacks, sodas, fast food, processed meats, and refined grains. Tesfu highlights the negative impacts this type of food can have, along with what it lacks. "They often lack fiber, vitamins, and minerals that are crucial for supporting metabolic processes. Regular consumption of these foods can lead to weight gain, imbalanced blood sugar levels, and increased risk of chronic diseases, which can negatively impact metabolic efficiency," she says.

Healthier Alternatives

Although there are a lot of highly processed and refined foods within our reach, there are just as many healthy options available. Tesfu gives us examples along with the benefits they provide to us, such as essential nutrients, fiber, and much more. "Opting for whole, unprocessed foods can help support an efficient metabolism. Include nutrient-dense options such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins (e.g., poultry, fish, legumes), healthy fats (e.g., avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil), and unprocessed dairy or dairy alternatives. These foods provide essential nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants that support overall metabolic health."

The Bottom Line

Many factors play into the state of our metabolism when it comes to its efficiency and how we use it to become healthier. Tesfu reminds us to keep all of our other lifestyle habits in check, too, as they can impact our metabolic health greatly. "Remember that maintaining a healthy metabolism involves a combination of factors, including a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and managing stress levels. Making sustainable lifestyle changes and focusing on long-term habits is essential for supporting metabolic efficiency and overall well-being," she notes.
