Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day, and for anyone trying to lose weight, it’s essential to never miss this step. While you’re at it, starting the day off with energy-filled, satiating foods is the way to go, which is why countless experts swear by having whole grains first thing in the morning. Whole grains are naturally high in fiber, which keeps you fuller for longer and able to maintain a healthy body weight (and lose more if desired!)

They’re also linked to lower risks of heart disease, diabetes and more. For this reason, we checked in with health experts to learn what whole grain-based breakfast helps you conquer fat loss while providing vital nutrients simultaneously. Read on for tips and suggestions from Jay Cowin, NNCP, RNT, RNC, CHN, CSNA, registered nutritionist, Trista Best, MPH, RD, registered dietitian, and health and nutrition expert Dr. Daniel Boyer, M.D.

How Avocado Toast For Breakfast Can Help You Lose Weight

This breakfast staple is popular for many reasons— from its filling fiber to its delicious taste. Avocado toast on whole wheat bread is a good breakfast choice for weight loss because it is nutrient-rich and low in calories, Cowin explains. “The avocado provides healthy monounsaturated fats, while the whole wheat bread provides complex carbohydrates and fiber,” he says, “Together, this breakfast option will help to keep you feeling full and satisfied throughout the morning, helping to prevent overeating later in the day.”

Eating avocados on whole wheat toast especially is an “excellent way” to take in many nutrients and healthy fats that can improve our health, Best says. “They are beneficial for heart health, inflammation, and even skin health. The healthy fats that avocados provide along with the fiber found in whole wheat toast are an incredible weight loss combination,” she continues. Best notes that these two factors will cause the digestion process to slow down which will keep the consumer full for longer and thereby prevent overeating.

Lastly, consuming foods rich in monounsaturated fats like avocados, Boyer says, may also reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and enhance metabolism. “The higher your metabolic rate, the faster your body burns calories which in turn enhances faster weight loss,” he says. Additionally, he concludes, healthy fats found in avocados “also manage inflammation, a condition that may aid in weight gain when it becomes chronic.”
