Phil Collins is undoubtedly a musical icon, and the 70-year-old drummer recently opened up about the health struggles that have begun to stand in the way of his playing music. Starting his career back in 1970 as a drummer for the band Genesis, Collins has had a hand in some of the biggest hits over the last 50 years, but the musician revealed to BBC Breakfast that he can no longer hold a drumstick due to a series of injuries throughout his life.

Describing his desire to still play his instrument of choice, Collins shared, "I'd love to but you know, I mean, I can barely hold a stick with this hand. So there are certain physical things that get in the way." He then commented on the frustration that comes with watching his son, Nic Collins, perform in Genesis and not being able to join him behind the drumset.

"I'm kind of physically challenged a bit which is very frustrating because I'd love to be playing up there with my son," he shared. However, Collins still plans to perform with Genesis who will be going back on tour for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, but will instead be flexing his iconic vocals with band members Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks.

The 70-year-old musician also revealed his uncertainty as to the future of his career with Genesis as he grows older, sharing that this may be his last tour with the band. "We're all men of our age, and I think to some extent, I think it probably is putting it to bed. I think yeah, I think just generally for me, I don't know if I want to go out on the road anymore,” he admitted to BBC

Collins has had a number of health struggles throughout his life, first undergoing back surgery back in 2015 before suffering a fall in 2017 where he sustained a head injury. Due to back surgery, Collins also suffered from “drop foot” which has made him more prone to falling, and it was revealed that the drummer now uses a cane to keep himself upright following the 2017 tumble.
