Is there anyone who couldn’t use more storage space on their phones? Storage space gives us the ability to continue using our devices the way we want, so that we are never caught unable to take photos and videos and confronted with that frustrating pop-up alerting us to our need for more storage. When that pop-up appears, the race is on to free up storage or take the easier and more expensive route: buy more storage.
A better plan is to not wait until your storage is that low to take action. Keeping on top of your apps so that you free up storage a little at a time is a less stressful approach. No one is eager to get rid of apps they love and use often, but deleting pre-installed apps that you don’t find important is a painless way to help your storage issues. Here are six pre-installed apps to consider deleting.
1. iMovie
Although iMovie is not pre-installed by default on iPhones, it can be downloaded for free from the App Store. The app is used to edit video clips, add sound and music, apply filters, and so much more. It’s difficult to call this one “not important,” because that will depend on how often you use it. But the app uses around 600 MB to 700 MB, and your projects are stored on the app, which adds to how much storage it requires.

2. Keynote
Keynote is Apple’s presentation app that is often (but not always) pre-installed on your iPhone. It’s a great tool for creating charts and slideshows, but if you aren’t using it, you can save 600 MB to 700 MB in storage space by deleting it.

3. Apple News
Apple News provides curated news stories and articles that are pulled from a variety of sources. Although its storage needs are relatively small, typically under 50 MB, if you never find yourself reading article from Apple News, and have your own favorite news sources, there’s no need to keep it on your device.

4. Podcasts
Apple’s built-in Podcasts app lets you stream, download, and listen to podcasts. Sounds great — but it could be redundant if you already use a different app like Spotify to stream this content. Worse, it could be contributing to storage issues. While the app itself only takes up 20–50 MB, each episode that is stored on the app increases that space. If you never delete episodes, that space adds up fast.

5. Apple Stocks
The good news about Apple Stocks is that the built-in app only consumes about 10 MB or less storage space. But if you have never used the app, or prefer a more targeted app to track your stock activity (such as one associated with your financial institution) why not delete Apple Stocks and save space?

6. GarageBand
Like iMovie, GarageBand is not pre-installed on iPhones or iPads by default, but it is a free Apple app that you can download from the App Store. The app takes up 1.5 GB to 2 GB (not an insignificant amount), and you can check how much storage yours is consuming by going to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > GarageBand. Unless you absolutely need the app, it’s not a necessary one to download.
