Everyone was so excited to hear that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed their newborn daughter into the world this week. What can be sweeter than a new little royal, especially one named for a princess and a queen.
But now a lot of people are wondering, what exactly is Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor? Does she have a title, and what is her role within the royal family?
Lilibet Diana Is Not A Princess (Yet)
Prince Harry's daughter is not a princess - at least not yet. There is a chance that the palace could one day allow Lilibet to take on the title of princess.
All of Prince William and Kate Middleton's kids were given the title of prince or princess upon birth, but Meghan and Harry's children don't have the same privelege. Neither Archie nor Lilibet are prince or princess by title.
And this is not a specific slight against Harry and Meghan after they stepped down from their duties as senior members of the royal family and moved to North America last year. The Queen actually has 11 great-grandchildren, and only Prince William's children have the titles of prince and princess.
This is because a 1917 rule made by King George V - Queen Elizabeth's grandfather - states that “The grandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of Dukes of these Our Realms.”
Prince William is the heir in the direct line to the throne. His father, Prince Charles is the direct heir, making William second in line.
His children are all in direct line to the throne, in age order. This means that Prince Harry is sixth in line to the throne, following his dad, brother, nephews and neice. And Archie is seventh in line to the throne!
The line of succession currently includes 22 people. Lilibet's name is not currently mentioned, though it is likely to be added soon.
Lilibet Diana's Official Title Will Be 'Miss'
As the 1917 rule states, the three of the Queen's great-grandchildren who are decendents of the first son of the direct heir to the throne are titled prince and princess. Which is a long way of saying that Prince William's two sons are princes and his daughter is a princess.
The rest of the Queen's great-grandchildren have been given the title of "Master" or "Miss."
Archie's official title is Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet's title will probably by Miss Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.
This is how titles have been given for the children of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, who are also grandchildren of the Queen.
It's also important to note that not all of the Queen's grandchildren were given the title of prince or princess. Peter Philips, Zara Tindall, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn are all grandchildren of the Queen who are not princes or princesses.
