Prince Harry has proudly worn his wedding band since marrying Meghan Markle in 2018. Meghan and Kate Middleton also wear their engagement and eternity rings, although the less said about the former Suits actress constantly changing hers, the better.

However, Prince William very noticeably doesn’t wear a wedding ring following his royal wedding in April 2011. But why?

Why Doesn't Prince William Wear A Wedding Ring?

According to reports, the Prince of Wales has never worn a wedding ring and probably never will – for a very simple reason.

"He's not one for jewelry," a source told the Mirror back in December 2023. "He's never worn any," they continued, adding: "He decided he didn't want to wear one now. It's all down to personal preference."

It's not just Prince William's personal preference, either, as several senior members of the royal family have also chosen to forgo wedding rings, meaning Prince Harry's decision to wear a wedding band actually goes against long-standing royal custom.

What Is The Royal Tradition Of Men Not Wearing Wedding Rings?

Of course, the Duke of Sussex breaking with royal tradition probably won't come as a surprise to many royal watchers.

"Although it's traditional for royal women to wear both an engagement ring and a wedding ring after they get married, it's never been traditional for royal men to wear one," royal commentator Eloise Parker told Marie Claire back in 2018. She added: "I think when you have a wedding watched by millions, everyone knows you're married."

Interestingly, though, while King Charles doesn't wear a wedding band on the traditional ring finger, he does actually wear one – you just have to look a little harder to spot it. Eagle-eyed royal fans will notice that the monarch usually wears his gold wedding band on the pinky finger of his left hand, nestled beneath his historic gold signet ring.

This is similar to his father, the late Prince Philip, who was seldom seen wearing a traditional wedding band. Instead, he was regularly photographed wearing the family's signet ring on his pinky finger, making it one of his most recognizable pieces of jewelry.
