Coffee is a beloved beverage enjoyed by millions around the world. Its rich aroma and robust flavors make it a comforting companion for people from all walks of life. As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, the arrival of fall brings with it a delightful array of seasonal coffee drinks. One of the most iconic of these is the pumpkin spice latte, but there are also healthier alternatives to this indulgent favorite.

We spoke with Jesse Feder, RDN, CPT, to learn about the pumpkin spice alternative that could help you keep excess weight off this fall. Feder shared that pumpkin spice oatmilk or almond milk latte is a much healthier alternative.

Pumpkin Spice Latte

The Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) is a beloved seasonal beverage known for its delightful blend of pumpkin, spices, and espresso. However, it's worth noting that traditional PSLs served at some coffee shops can be calorie and sugar bombs, potentially contributing to weight gain when consumed in excess. These sugary concoctions often contain high levels of added sugars and are made with whole milk, which can add significant calories to your daily intake. To make a healthier choice, many coffee shops now offer options with oat milk or almond milk as substitutes for regular milk.

"Whole milk is quite high in fat, sugar, and calories. It can add on hundreds of calories to a latte. Having a milk alternative latte such as one with almond milk or oat milk can cut down on calories, sugars, and fats, which is great for supporting weight loss," Feder says.

While classics like the Pumpkin Spice Latte are undeniably delicious, there are healthier alternatives available for those looking to enjoy the tastes of autumn without compromising their well-being. So, whether you're sipping a cozy latte or experimenting with homemade creations, fall is the perfect time to indulge in the warmth and comfort of seasonal coffee beverages, but with a healthier twist.

These plant-based milk alternatives provide a creamy texture without the saturated fat of dairy, making for a lighter and more figure-friendly pumpkin spice latte. By opting for these alternatives and being mindful of portion sizes, you can enjoy the comforting flavors of fall while maintaining a healthier balance in your diet.
