Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie shocked the world when they announced that they were divorcing after 2 years of marriage and 12 years together back in Sept. 2016, leaving fans in the dark as to why they decided to call it quits. Now, the couple is opening up about what went wrong in their seemingly-perfect relationship and why they work better apart.

Jolie says that their marriage became "difficult" in the summer of 2016 when she was in post-production on her film First They Killed My Father. "Things got bad," Jolie told Vanity Fair. "I didn't want to use that word. ... Things became 'difficult.' It's just been the hardest time, and we're just kind of coming up for air. [This house] is a big jump forward for us, and we're all trying to do our best to heal our family."

Then, it was revealed that Pitt had a drinking problem, which definitely played a big role in his split from Jolie. “Personally, I can’t remember a day since I got out of college when I wasn’t boozing or had a spliff, or something. Something. And you realize that a lot of it is, um — cigarettes, you know, pacifiers. And I’m running from feelings,” he told GQ. “I’m really, really happy to be done with all of that. I mean, I stopped everything except boozing when I started my family. But even this last year, you know — things I wasn’t dealing with. I was boozing too much. It’s just become a problem. And I’m really happy it’s been half a year now, which is bittersweet, but I’ve got my feelings in my fingertips again.”

Now, Pitt and Jolie are focused on co-parenting their six children and doing what's best for them. "We’re both doing our best. I heard one lawyer say, ‘No one wins in court — it’s just a matter of who gets hurt worse.’ And it seems to be true, you spend a year just focused on building a case to prove your point and why you’re right and why they’re wrong, and it’s just an investment in vitriolic hatred. I just refuse. And fortunately my partner in this agrees. It’s just very, very jarring for the kids, to suddenly have their family ripped apart," he said.

We're sad that Pitt and Jolie are divorced, but we're happy to see that these two are making it work for the sake of their children!
