It’s no secret that Rihanna is one of today’s modern style icons, always getting praised for her inventive and chic red carpet looks. However, it appears that she’s missed the mark with her Smurfs film premiere look.

The singer-songwriter recently attended the Los Angeles premiere of the new Smurfs movie, in which she voiced a character. She stepped out onto the special blue carpet in a long, dark, and uniquely shaped ballgown that showed off her growing pregnancy belly. While her event dresses and outfits usually get a lot of praise, this one didn’t go over so well with internet users who wrote that the gown was “hideous” on social media. Read more about it below.

Rihanna Steps Out With Her Sons In A Saint Laurent Ballgown For The Los Angeles 'Smurfs' Premiere

On Sunday, July 13th, Los Angeles celebrated the release of the latest animated Smurfs film, which is jam-packed with stars voicing the tiny blue characters. A special bright Smurf-blue carpet was laid out for celebrities at the premiere, with some of them bringing their children, including the expecting mother of two, Rihanna.

The pop star was one of the more highly anticipated stars to attend the film premiere, as she voiced the role of Smurfette, who is a significant character in the movie's plot. People were also excited to see what she would wear and how she and her team would choose to style her for the premiere of a movie targeted towards children.

The Fenty founder wore a long, dark chocolate-colored ballgown from Saint Laurent. The gown had a lace trim top and puffy skirt, with the fabric and a dark green ribbon around her torso accentuating her large pregnancy belly, which she first debuted at the 2025 Met Gala.

With her two young sons, RZA and Riot by her side, Rihanna flashed big smiles at the Smurfs celebration and flaunted her accessories, which included a dark brown leather jacket and some stylish sunglasses. While the ensemble added a dramatic flair to the fun occasion, some internet users were not pleased with it.

Internet Users Slam Rihanna's Premiere Look On Social Media

After the premiere came to an end, pictures of the Grammy-winner and her sons went viral on social media, as people were excited to see her boys by her side and how far she's come in her pregnancy. Whenever Rihanna attends an event, there are typically tons of positive comments from fans and fashion enthusiasts praising her stylish looks on social media, but this time, it was different.

On Instagram, internet users and some of the singer's fans shared their disappointment in her extravagant gown and left some harsh words in the comments section.

"What is that hideous dress?" asked a user.

Another Instagram user joked that with the large dress on, the 37-year-old "looks like a giant eggplant."

Others acknowledged how cute her two little boys were, but couldn't get over the outfit, writing, "They are all beautiful, but that dress!"

"The dress is awful," added another, while one user called it a "granny nightgown."

Although this outfit was a bit of a flop in the internet's eyes, we can't imagine it would have a major impact on her status as a fashion icon. Still, it was definitely interesting to see how much people were against it.
