Ketchup is a pretty common topping for eggs because its tomato and vinegar flavors add an interesting palate to the eggs with minimal effort. But what most people don’t realize is that ketchup can come with some unwanted side effects.

Though it is usually quite low in calories, ketchup is made with high levels of sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and salt. In large quantities, these ingredients can contribute to slower metabolisms and even weight gain.

Swap the ketchup for a more wholesome egg sauce, like a homemade topping made with a Greek yogurt base. Or try adding slices of tomato to your recipe to get some similar flavors to what you’re missing from the ketchup.
