There are a number of misconceptions when it comes to mature skin and makeup — the biggest one is perhaps that, the older you get, the less makeup you should wear. According to Makeup Artist Ellen from TikTok’s askellenbeauty, cutting down on the number of products you use isn’t always the best course of action. It may be wiser to change the way you apply your makeup, the formulation of certain products, like foundation, and the facial features you focus on.

Ellen keeps things simply by providing three big tips that you can put into place today. None of the tips require that you spend a lot of money or acquire the application skills of a professional makeup artist, either. These are a makeup artist’s secrets for achieving a youthful look on mature skin—tips that “instantly give your face a lift.”

1. Focus on Eyebrows

As we age, we tend to lose hairs in the front of the eyebrow and tail, according to Ellen. A more youthful look can be achieved by simply boosting the density of brows with an eyebrow pencil in the same color or slightly lighter than your brows. Focus it on the beginning of your brow, near the inner corner of your eyes, and don’t forget to extend the shade along the outer tail of your eyebrow so that your eyes appear larger and more awake.

2. Apply Concealer Under Foundation

One of the biggest mistakes that Ellen says she sees is people applying a very light ring of concealer around the eyes over their foundation. This can create a patchy, dry-looking result that isn’t flattering on mature skin. A better way to apply base makeup is by choosing hydrating foundation formulations that are designed for older skin (these won’t look cakey and sit in pores). But apply concealer under your eyes before your apply foundation.

Let your base makeup “air dry.” Don’t apply loose powder over wet concealer or “you’re going to look 10 years older,” Ellen says.

3. Go Easy With Contour Makeup

The only time that Ellen says she recommends applying less makeup on mature skin is when it comes to contouring. She recommends avoiding “gray” contour tones and keeping it “super subtle” with just a “touch” of contour under the cheekbones, down the nose, and along the jawline.

These small shifts in your makeup application and the products that you use can make a world of difference.
