When you reach a certain age, it’s crucial to follow healthy lifestyle habits that can prevent you from suffering as you get older.
After all, it’s no secret that certain physical activities and mental challenges get harder as you age, especially past the age of 80. While age isn’t something we can control, we can have a say in how much effort we put towards our quality of life. This is something especially important to think about as you get older, as small lifestyle changes and habits can make a big difference over time.
We spoke with senior health and living expert Dr. Patrick Contino, the Medical Director of Senior Living at Asheville Brooklet Clinic, and Dr. Dusan Sajic, the Program Director at Fellowship in Cutaneous Laser and Surgery, about three simple lifestyle habits people over the age of 80 should take on to improve their quality of life. Read more about them below.
Avoid A Sedentary Lifestyle
These days, it's common for people over a certain age, especially those who are retired, to live a much more sedentary lifestyle that often involves more sitting than standing or walking. While it's understandable, if you're able to walk around or do any other form of exercise, doctors say you should!
"Lack of exercise speeds up aging by allowing chemical reactions that enable inflammation and oxidation pathways to do their damage without anything in their way to stop it," says Dr. Contino.
The senior living expert also recommends "walking, lifting weights, sports activities (not including Esports), aerobic classes at your local gym or community center, and gardening" whenever possible on a daily basis.

Get Enough Sleep
Sleep is one of the most vital habits to ensure that we stay in good health at any age, but it's especially important for those who are over the age of 80. Dr. Contino says you need to prioritize sleep, as "sleep deprivation increases stress in all your body's cells."
"Ensure you are getting proper sleep," he continues. "Sleep requirements vary by individual, but anywhere from 6 and ½ to 9 hours per night is the amount to aim for."
If you're struggling to sleep due to other ailments or insomnia, speak to your doctor about ways they can help you ensure you're able to get some proper shut-eye.

Socialize
Did you know that spending quality time with your family and friends can not only be fun and memorable but also good for your health?
According to Dr. Dusan Sajic, elderly people should consider weekly meetups with friends and cherished family members as they can drastically improve their quality of life and even lengthen their lifespan.
"Strong social bonds are one of the main reasons the blue zones in the world have so many people living over 100 years," he said.
