We are all looking for ways to save time on meal prep without sacrificing our nutrition. Breakfast is one of the hardest–during the work week, scrambling to get out the door on time means that it’s easier to go for something quick, which often means that it’s less nutritious. However, convenient doesn’t always have to mean unhealthy. You don’t have to choose between keeping up with your busy life and meeting your fitness goals.
Smoothies are a great way to pack a lot of nutrition into a small package that is transportable and easy to make. Jennifer Jacobs, an NASM certified fitness-nutrition specialist and Beachbody supertrainer, shared her tips for crafting the perfect smoothie for achieving your health goals.
According to Jacobs, one thing that you should include in your smoothies, especially for weight loss, is a source of healthy fat. “Contrary to popular belief, some fats are good for you! Especially healthy fats which serve as a great energy source,” Jacobs says, “These healthy fats assist our bodies in building healthy cells and regulating hormones. They also help with the absorption of certain fat-soluble vitamins which ultimately help boost your immunity and maintain strong bones and healthy skin.” Examples of healthy fats include nuts, nut butters, avocados, chia seeds, flaxseeds, and hemp seeds. These are all things you can include in your smoothies to make sure you’re getting enough healthy fats in your diet. Jacobs shared with SheFinds one of her favorite smoothie recipes, rich in healthy fats, that’s perfect for starting your day off strong.
1. 8 oz water
2. Beachbody Performance Recharge protein powder
3. Spinach
4. ½ cup of blueberries
5. ½ frozen banana
6. 1 tbsp nut butter of choice
7. 1 tbsp chia seeds
If you need something even easier, Jacobs recommends Shakeology as a quick and healthy option. “It already contains all the protein, fiber and some of the healthy fats you need.” She says. Add a serving of shakeology to a blender with water and ice and you’re ready to go!
Ultimately, the key to achieving your fitness goals, especially if you’re trying to lose weight, is eating a balanced diet. “They say abs are best made in the kitchen and it’s true!” Jacobs says. “The best thing to do is to follow a nutritious diet filled with nutrient dense foods like whole grains, fruits, veggies, healthy fats (i.e. fatty fish, avocados, nuts) and lean protein.” By eating a well-balanced and nutrient dense diet you are providing your body with the fuel it needs throughout the day to help your body feel its best Smoothies are a great way to pack in nutrients while saving time.
