Social media apps are a big part of most smartphone users’ lives, but they can also come with some downsides.

Aside from being addictive and time sucks, social media apps come with both safety risks and battery drainage. Some social media apps are known to do more damage in certain departments than others, and the overall suggestion is to limit your time on social media each day. However, there is one social media app that tech experts tend to frown upon, as not only can it drain battery life, but it also comes with some privacy concerns. Read more about the app and what experts had to say below.

How Snapchat Drains Your Battery

There are so many social media apps these days, and if you're using them frequently, they can all tend to drain your battery over time. Still, many tech experts agree that Snapchat is one of the worst battery-draining social media apps out there.

"Snapchat runs in the background continuously and checks for messages, new stories, it keeps using your camera, and tracks your location," explains tech expert Amy Mortlock with ShadowDragon. "Users have reported their phones randomly lagging after they installed Snapchat, with multiple processes running even after closing the app."

How Snapchat Can Invade Your Privacy

Again, Snapchat is a much more complicated app than it used to be, and therefore, there are a lot more features that can cause some privacy risks. However, from the start, there have been safety and privacy concerns with Snapchat, and it started with people screenshotting or downloading pictures that were supposed to be up temporarily.

Now, with stories and the location-tracking Snap Map, it's gotten even riskier, according to tech experts.

"Snapchat is hands down the worst," says tech expert Alina Braverman of Celfie Lock. "They collect location data, you can't use all the features w/o sharing it, and image data with their filters they use for ads. Snapchat also has an issue with child sex trafficking and predators, and has been sued."
