Sofia Vergara may be most well known for her portrayal of Gloria on Modern Family, but the 49-year-old actress is taking on a dramatic new role of drug queenpin Griselda Blanco in the new Netflix limited series, Griselda. But not only is the character significantly different from Vergara’s loving and sweet persona on the ABC sitcom, the actress also underwent a significant physical transformation to fit the role as well.
Netflix shared one of the first images from Griselda to Twitter last week, showing Vergara rocking noticeably darker hair and thinner brows than her classic bombshell look. Where Vergara loves a heavily lined eye and highlighted locks, her new character opts for lighter face makeup and wavy brown hair to complete the transformation.

The show was announced by Netflix back in November of last year, and is said to follow the dramatic life of the drug queenpin. In fact, Vergara has been developing the program for the last eight years, so it’s safe to say she’s ready to take on the role.
In a press release for Griselda, the actress revealed, “Griselda Blanco was a larger-than-life character whose ruthless but ingenious tactics allowed her to rule a billion dollar empire years before many of the most notorious male kingpins we know so much about.”
According to a statement that Netflix made to TODAY, “‘Griselda’ is inspired by the savvy and ambitious Colombian businesswoman, Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. A devoted mother, Blanco’s lethal blend of charm and unsuspected savagery helped her expertly navigate between family and business leading her to become widely known as the ‘Godmother.'”
No release date for Griselda has been announced yet by Netflix, but we can’t wait to see more of Vergara’s dramatic transformation!
