It’s always good to add leafy greens to your diet, but a recent recall on bags of Fresh Express and Publix Spinach may mean you need to throw out some of the veggies you have stocked up in your freezer.
On December 15, 2023, the FDA announced a recall on 8-oz bags of Fresh Express Spinach and 9-oz bags of Publix Spinach due to potential listeria contamination. Find all the details below.

Bags of spinach recalled for potential Listeria contamination
According to the FDA, spinach sold by Fresh Express and Publix tested positive for listeria bacteria in a routine sampling by the Florida Department of Agriculture. "Fresh Express immediately notified affected retailers and instructed them to remove the recalled items from store shelves and all inventories," the announcement from the FDA states.
These products were distributed across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia.
All recalled bags of spinach from Fresh Express and Publix have a product code of G332. The 8-oz bags of Fresh Express spinach have a "best by" date of 12/15/23 and UPC code 071279132044, while 9-oz bags of Publix spinach have a "best by" date of 12/14/23 and UPC code 041415008861.
Of course, these expiration dates have passed by now. However, some consumers may have frozen the greens to cook at a later date.
If you happen to have any of these products in your kitchen, you should refrain from consuming them and discard of them immediately. "To obtain a refund or for more information, consumers may call the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center at (800) 242-5472 between the hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time," the FDA instructs, noting that "Refunds are also available where purchased."
No illnesses have been reported from this recall. However, listeriosis is a serious infection that can be especially harmful to older adults, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant people, and newborns. The FDA notes that symptoms include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
