A well-rounded, healthy diet is one of the most important factors in sustainable weight loss. However, preparing a nutritious meal three times a day can be overwhelming and stressful, which is part of the reason so many healthy-eaters turn to smoothies for at least one of their daily meals. With no cooking time and easy clean up, smoothies are a great solution. Plus, certain smoothie ingredients – like spirulina – can make these nutritious drinks even more effective for losing weight.
Spirulina
So, what is spirulina? VeryWell Health explains that it's a type of "blue-green algae" that is rich in nutrients, like B-vitamins, vitamin E, antioxidants, minerals, and chlorophyll. Plus, it's a popular source of vegan protein.
Even with all these nutrients, spirulina is low in calories – making it an excellent ingredient for those looking to lose weight. "A 500 mg serving contains just 2 calories, allowing you to pack your body with nutrients while saving on calories," Lisa Hayim, registered dietitian and founder of The Well Necessities and TWN Collection, tells Self.
"The protein in spirulina is also easily digested and absorbed, making it easier to build lean muscle, which helps the body burn more calories and fat throughout the day," Hayim adds. With that in mind, adding some spirulina to your favorite smoothies could be a great way to boost weight loss.
