In anticipation that gross sales won't fully recover until a minimum of this fall, and the fact that it's keeping operations to drive-thru and carry-out only, the coffee chain stated that it's encouraging staff to take unpaid leave until that time.

Starbucks Corp. will be keeping dining rooms at most of its thousands of U.S. locations closed for now amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision to trim worker hours was not taken lightly; in a statement titled "Building a bridge to our future," CEO Kevin Johnson stated that employees would be able to keep their access to health benefits.

Starbucks is among many fast-food chains deciding whether to reopen and retain staff amid the crisis. In fact, they've been indicating for some time that they might need to scale back worker's hours. Workers will have some time to decide if they want to go unemployment or not.

Additionally, protests sparked by the murder of George Floyd have given some chains such as CVS and Whole Foods a reason to stay closed--at least for the time being.
