Sugar plays a significant role in our health, and its impact can vary depending on the type and amount consumed. Too much added sugar, commonly found in sugary snacks and beverages, can contribute to weight gain, diabetes, and heart issues. It’s wise to limit consumption of such added sugars for better health.

However, there are natural sugars present in healthy foods like fruits and milk. These sugars come packaged with essential nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Unlike added sugars, these natural sugars have a different effect on our bodies and can be beneficial when consumed as part of a balanced diet. Fruits, for instance, offer a range of health benefits beyond just their natural sugars.

Korin Sutton, a master fitness trainer and health coach who boasts almost 30K followers on TikTok, revealed to his audience that there is one type of sugar you can eat all you want while on a diet and still lose weight, and that is cane sugar. Read on to learn more.

Cane Sugar

Cane sugar is a type of sweetener derived from sugar cane plants. It is a natural source of sugar and is often used to sweeten foods and beverages. Unlike highly processed sugars, cane sugar retains some of its natural minerals and nutrients, such as calcium and iron. However, it’s still important to consume cane sugar in moderation, as excessive intake of any type of sugar can contribute to health issues like weight gain and diabetes.

In the syrup and sugar aisle, Sutton first warns us not to go for sweeteners such as agave syrup due to not just its high sugar content but also the fact that it carries 60 calories in one tablespoon and 16 grams of carbohydrates. Wow!

Instead, Sutton turns to grab cane sugar, a much healthier option. “Regular cane sugar only has 30 calories per tablespoon and only 8 grams of carbohydrates. It’s not really that bad, especially if you stick to two tablespoons.”

He also gives other healthier options for natural sugars, such as coconut sugar, but warns that it’s not the sweetest sugar out there if that’s what you’re looking for.

Another lesser-known sweetener is erythritol. “Erythritol is a great sugar replacement. As you can see here, it says 70% as sweet as sugar and only 10 grams of carbohydrates. Also, Erythritol is actually very good for your teeth,” Sutton notes. That’s certainly not the case with regular refined sugar!

The Bottom Line

Overall, understanding the role of sugar in our diet is crucial for making informed choices about our health and weight management. While excessive consumption of added sugars can lead to weight gain and health problems, there are healthier alternatives, such as natural sugars found in fruits and milk. Among these, cane sugar stands out as a more nutrient-retaining option compared to highly processed sugars. However, moderation remains key even with healthier sugar choices, as excessive intake can still contribute to health concerns. Fitness experts like Korin Sutton provide valuable insights on the benefits of cane sugar and other natural sweeteners, emphasizing the importance of mindful consumption in a well-rounded diet. As we navigate the world of sugar, it's essential to strike a balance that supports our health and wellness goals.
