You’re already choosing a diet-friendly option when you make overnight oats, but you can make this healthy breakfast even better for weight loss by adding a few ingredients. When added to overnight oats, certain ingredients can help boost your metabolism and burn more calories, making it a great breakfast option if you are trying to lose weight.

Adding just one ingredient can help you stick to your weight loss goals. According to Daily Harvest’s Nutritionist Amy Shapiro MS, RD, CDN, the best ingredient to add to your overnight oats is collagen powder.

Collagen Powder

Collagen powder is a form of protein made of broken down collagen that is more easily absorbed and used in your body, which can help boost your metabolism. Shapiro explains, "Protein is an important nutrient for metabolism health and function as our body needs to work harder to digest it, so the thermogenic effect is higher, and our metabolism raises slightly for a few hours after eating."

With that in mind, starting your day with a bowl of overnight oats plus collagen powder can kickstart your metabolism for the rest of the morning.

Gut Health

In addition to boosting your metabolism, collagen powder has other health benefits. Shapiro explains, "[Collagen] helps to heal the gut lining, and it promotes hair and skin health too."

When adding collagen powder to your overnight oats, you are not only working toward your wieght loss goals, but also helping improve your overall health and appearance.

Tasteless

Shapiro explained that another advantage of adding collagen powder to your overnight oats recipe is that collagen powder is actually tasteless.

With that in mind, collagen powder can provide all of these health benefits without changing the flavor of your favorite overnight oats recipe.

Brazil Nuts

Looking for another ingredient to add to your overnight oats? Shapiro also recommends trying brazil nuts.

She explains, "Everyone adds walnuts and almonds to their oats. They are healthy choices, but Brazil nuts are a great source of selenium. Just two a day meet our daily requirement." If you're wondering why selenium is important, Shapiro has got you covered. She explains further, "Selenium supports thyroid health, and our thyroid gland is what controls our metabolism."
