If you're a vegetarian, there's a limited list of things you can eat at McDonald's. Unfortunately, the fast food super chain does not offer a proper veggie burger in the United States. Vegetarian options include: the fruit and yogurt parfaits, oatmeal, side salads, and more. But are these options actually good for you? Click through the slideshow to find out what you should never order from McDonald's as a vegetarian.

Vegetarians should avoid order the famous french fries at McDonald's. Myth Busters went behind the scenes to see how Mickey D's fries are created. A representive from McDonald's said the following, "At this time, none of our menu items are certified as vegetarian or vegan. The oil our suppliers use to partially fry our World Famous Fries has a natural beef flavoring, which also contains hydrolyzed milk as a starting ingredient, added to enhance the taste." Beef flavoring? No thank you.

As a vegetarian or vegan, it's important to be careful when eating at fast food restaurants such a McDonald's. There's always a chance of cross contamination. McDonald's states, "It’s important to note that, despite taking precautions, normal kitchen operations may involve some shared cooking and preparation equipment, areas and utensils, and there is a possibility for your food items to come in contact with other food products."

The McDonald's website also says, "We have many customizable menu items like our Premium McWraps and Salads that we’re happy to make for you without meat; although, these aren’t certified vegetarian."

However, in general, fast food salads are not a healthiest option. While the main ingredients of the salad might be nutritious, you really run into trouble with the toppings. The dressings, cheeses, and other additions offered at fast food joints usually negate the healthiness of the salad (All Day).

As an experiment, a writer for Business Insider at an all-vegetarian fast food diet for a week. Although she was a fan of McDonald's oatmeal, it has 32 grams of sugar (more than half of the daily recommendation). So be careful, vegetarian doesn't mean nutritious!
