The Scary Downside To Fit Teas That No One Tells You About

Celebrities love fit teas. Well, they love to endorse fit teas (also know as detox teas). You can barely scroll through Instagram without seeing a smiling celebrity holding up a bag of their favorite "skinny" tea. However, there's a scary downside to these fit teas that celebrities never mention. Click through the slideshow to find out why you shouldn't drink fit teas.

So what is fit tea? Fit teas and detox teas claim to help you lose weight, burn calories, and boost your metabolism. The teas state they cleanse your body, suppress your appetite, and increase your energy.

Sounds great right? Well, it turns out there isn't a lot of research to support these claims. According to Health, the research on these detox teas is far and few between. Which means there's still a lot of questions regarding how they work and what they do to your body.

Aside from the fact that detox teas are extremely misleading, these teas often have unwanted side effects. According to Health, detox teas contain additional herbs intended to curb your appetite or boost your metabolism. One example is senna, which is a plant with a natural laxative effect. The potential side effects of ingesting senna include abdominal pain and discomfort, cramps, bloating, gas, nausea, and diarrhea (Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database). Health explains that excessive senna use can lead to "potassium depletion and other electrolyte abnormalities, which can trigger muscle spasms and an abnormal heart rhythm.

Another popular ingredient in fit teas is guarana, which a plant that's often added to energy drinks. Just of few of its effects include nervousness, restlessness, stomach irritation, nausea, vomiting, headache, anxiety, and agitation. On top of these side effects, the caffeine in fit teas can affect your sleep. If you don't get enough sleep, drinking a sleep tea is completely points. According to Health, lack of sleep has been shown to trigger excessive eating, weight gain, and slow metabolism. When you're trying to loose weight, getting the proper amount of sleep should be a top priority. Many fit teas are supposed to be consumed before bed, but you shouldn't drink any tea with caffeine in it a least six hours before bed.
