Before you stock up on tubs of ice cream ahead of Memorial Day weekend and the warm weather, be sure to stay updated on the latest ice cream recall news.

Last month, an umbrella company that produces several different brands of store-bought ice cream voluntarily recalled thousands of containers of ice cream and other frozen dessert products due to them potentially containing pieces of plastic. The Food and Drug Administration recently announced the recall, which affected several states. The recall is quite shocking, as 17,866 containers of ice cream and desserts are being pulled from stores right before the upcoming holiday. Read more about the ice cream recall below.

Ice Cream Manufacturer Recalls Nearly 18,000 Containers Of Ice Cream Due To Potential Plastic Contamination

On April 25th, Wells Enterprises, Inc., a dessert manufacturer that produces several different brands of ice cream and frozen dessert products, including Halo Top and Blue Bunny, issued a voluntary recall over concerns that some container's packaging was contaminated with pieces of plastic.

The recall was identified by the FDA as 'Class II,' which, according to their website, means "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."

The incident involves 22 different types of ice cream and dessert product flavors, including "Country Vanilla" and "Mocha Almond Fudge." Reports state that the ice cream and frozen yogurt products were sold in 3-gallon tubs, but had to be recalled as plastic, a foreign material, "may be present" inside.

The recall is considered nationwide, as the gallons of ice cream were distributed to 103 centers nationwide in several states, including Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, and Texas. Although it's unclear how the plastic may have gotten into some of the ice cream containers, Wells Enterprises Inc. seems to be working diligently with the FDA to ensure that any potentially tainted containers of their desserts are being removed from stores.

What To Do About The Nationwide Ice Cream Recall

The recall timing is fascinating, considering that summertime is right around the corner, as is Memorial Day weekend, when people may eat more frozen treats than usual. If you're worried about the ice cream you've recently purchased, don't panic! Currently, there are no reported illnesses due to the recall, and because it's a Class II incident, there's less urgency.

Although the FDA has not released a more in-depth press release with more updated instructions, you can take a look at the listed recalled products on their initial report and pay attention to the expiration dates on your ice cream, as the recalled containers were marked with "Best If Used By" dates that range from March 2026 to October 2026. Of course, thoroughly inspecting your ice cream before consuming it is also a good idea.

Like with most recalls, the general advice is that if you've purchased any ice cream or frozen dessert containers that you fear may have been contaminated with plastic or any other foreign materials, you should discard them or return them to the place you bought them for a refund. Wells Enterprises Inc. is also encouraging any customers who have questions or concerns to fill out their online form. According to the FDA, the recall is still in progress nationwide, so it's always wise to be vigilant before serving the sweet treat.
