Brows might not always get the attention they deserve, but they play a huge role in creating a balanced, more symmetrical-looking face. They frame the eyes, define your features, and can completely change your overall expression. Yet, while we’re busy focusing on foundation, eyeshadow, and lip color, the brows often get left behind — or worse, they can be overworked in ways that don’t do us any favors.

Sometimes all you really need to look polished is a strong brow paired with a flattering lip. But achieving that effortless effect means steering clear of a few common mistakes. From going too heavy with a pencil to neglecting shape and symmetry, small errors can take away from the fresh, natural look you’re aiming for. To help you get the most out of your brows, here are four mistakes to avoid.

1. Overplucking

Overplucking may seem like a quick fix for stray hairs, but it often leaves brows looking thin and uneven, which can age your face and throw off its natural balance. A better approach is to tweeze only the obvious brows that are stray and let your natural shape guide you. If your brows are already sparse, consider filling them in with a soft pencil or powder for a fuller, more natural look.

2. Too-Dark Brows

Using a pencil that’s too dark can make brows appear harsh and drawn-on rather than flattering. Instead, choose a shade that’s one to two tones lighter than your natural brow color if you have dark hair, or slightly deeper if you’re blonde or gray. This creates definition without overpowering your features.

3. Using Unnatural Eyebrow Stencils

Relying on stiff, unnatural stencils can result in brows that look identical on both sides but not suited to your unique face shape. Since no two brows are exactly alike, it’s better to follow your natural arch and thickness. Light, feathery strokes with a pencil or powder will give you a softer, more realistic finish.

4. Skipping Brow Gel

Skipping brow gel might not seem like a big deal, but without it, your brows can look unruly and unfinished, even if you’ve filled them in well. A clear or tinted brow gel helps hold hairs in place and adds subtle texture, giving your brows a polished, lifted look that lasts all day.
