Foundation is often called the base of makeup for a reason—it sets the tone for everything else. When applied correctly with the right shade and texture, foundation can blur imperfections, even out your complexion, and create the illusion of naturally flawless skin. The best applications are the ones you don’t notice at all, where it looks like you woke up with radiant, smooth skin. That’s the magic of foundation done right: it enhances your natural beauty without announcing itself.

But foundation can just as easily work against you if the shade is off or the application isn’t smooth. Instead of a seamless finish, you may end up highlighting fine lines, dry patches, or uneven texture. This becomes even trickier as our skin changes with age, making technique and product choice more important than ever. Lucky for us, one makeup artist is sharing her tried-and-true hack that ensures your base makeup looks beautiful every single time:

Here is the best foundation hack to follow for great makeup.

Choose Natural Finish Foundation

A foundation with a natural finish is one of the best choices if you want your makeup to look fresh and effortless. Unlike formulas that are overly matte or super dewy, a natural finish strikes the perfect balance—it evens out your complexion while still letting your skin’s natural texture peek through. This makes it look like your skin, only smoother, which is ideal if your goal is to look polished without feeling “cakey.”

Use the Right Makeup Tools

Choosing the right tools can also make all the difference, and a damp sponge is a game-changer. Using it to apply foundation helps press the product into your skin for a seamless blend, rather than leaving streaks or uneven patches. The dampness also prevents the sponge from soaking up too much product, so you get just the right amount of coverage without wasting foundation.

Another hack is to use that same damp sponge to absorb extra makeup after you’ve finished applying. Gently pressing it over your face helps lift away any excess product sitting on top of the skin, which keeps your foundation from looking heavy or settling into fine lines. The result is a smoother, more natural-looking finish.
