The Unexpected Face Cream No One Should Be Buying At The Drugstore Anymore (It Makes Wrinkles WORSE!)

As we get older, it’s essential we take good care of our skin.

One of the most important steps to doing so is to moisturize daily. When skin is properly hydrated, it’s better equipped to fight signs of aging, like wrinkles, fine lines and crow’s feet. And moisturizers with dermatologist-approved ingredients like retinol, peptides and hyaluronic acid pull double duty by smoothing out skin’s texture AND preventing future signs of aging. (Sounds good to us!)

But that’s why choosing the right moisturizer is so important. Using a product that’s wrong for you means you can damage your skin without realizing it. That said, what’s one of the worst face creams you might be using on accident?

Scented face creams

Many people believe that scented face creams and moisturizers just smell nice, but the truth is that they can add unwanted side effects. For example, those with sensitive skin may react poorly to the fragrances, because the chemicals that power scents aggravate or irritate our face. And because this damage happens over time, most people don't even realize what's happening, or why fine lines are suddenly appearing on their face.

According to biologist and expert skin care esthetician Erica Suppa, fragrance is a pretty big deal-in a bad way.

"Fragrance is the number one ingredient that causes skin irritation," she explains. "Most beauty manufacturers use unnecessary fragrance and/or dyes in their products because consumers respond favorably to pretty colors and smells. But what may look and smell pretty isn't necessarily good for your skin."

Beyond face creams and moisturizers, you might be prematurely aging your skin just by spritzing your signature scent in the morning! When sprayed directly onto skin, perfume undermines the skin's ability to protect itself against UV damage-which is one of the leading causes of premature aging. That means you're immediately making yourself more vulnerable to aging pigmentation, like freckles and dark spots.

Sun damage is especially potent on the neck and chest area, where the skin is closer to bone. Instead, try spraying your perfume on your clothes or wrists to keep your delicate skin protected. And (as we all likely know), remember to slather on the SPF!

As nice as they smell, stay away from scented creams and moisturizers. In the long run, you're not doing your skin any favors by using them.
