If you’re hitting the McDonald’s drive-thru for breakfast today, no judgement. It’s hard to make a balanced meal at home in the mornings–especially when those golden arches are calling. Luckily, there is one breakfast order that health experts agree is totally fine to order, even if you’re watching your weight. Nutritionists agree, the fruit and maple oatmeal is surprisingly high in fiber and protein and has zero grams of trans fat and is low in calories. Who knew! Here’s all the information:
Fruit and Maple Oatmeal
The macronutrients breakdown–320 calories, 4.5g of fat, 1.5g of saturated fat, 0g of trans fat, 64g of carbohydrates and 6g of protein–make this meal ideal for cardiovascular health and energy, qualified nutritionist and personal trainer Paula Sawicka of Nutrition2change tells us.
"It contains oatmeal which is a great source of manganese, phosphorous, copper, B vitamins, iron, magnesium and zinc which have powerful antioxidants," she explains. The 4g of fiber this meal contains are perfect for "anyone looking for long term energy, to lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels." Um, amazing.
Additionally, it contains dried apples and cranberry, which Sawicka advises are good sources of potassium, vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, copper, fiber, calcium, iron and the vitamins A, E, B1, B2, and B6. "They are great for obtaining antioxidants and high-quality energy. They also contribute to the high fiber content of the meal, and may support weight loss." Wow!
Apples can regulate blood pressure and blood sugar levels (especially when mixed with oatmeal), which can reduce the risk of strokes, she explains, and cranberry can strengthen the immune system and improve digestive health.
Thanks to the light cream it contain, this breakfast is also low in calories, carbs and sugars.
"This meal is packed with a healthy balance of protein, carbs, and fiber," health expert Max Harland of Dentaly agrees. "Fiber is integral to good gut and heart health, which is great for your overall immunity. Plus, the presence of 64g of carbs ensures you get a decent energy boost when you have it."
