Lipstick has the power to transform a look instantly, but the wrong shade can sometimes do more harm than good—especially as we age. According to makeup artists, one lipstick color in particular tends to be the least flattering for mature women: dark lipstick shades, like black or deep red.
Kerrin Jackson, celebrity makeup artist and creator of The Makeup Refinery, explains that while bold, moody shades may resurface as a trend every few years, they rarely help women achieve a more youthful look. “The trend of dark lipstick comes and goes with much regularity these days,” Jackson says, “but this fad will never help anyone look younger.”
Avoid Black Or Deep Red Shades
The reason, she notes, comes down to basic principles of light. Dark shades—think deep burgundy, plum, or even black—absorb more light than brighter tones. As a result, Jackson explains, “on your lips, these lipstick shades actually make your lips appear thinner,” which can create the illusion of an older-looking face.
Instead of reaching for the darkest hues, experts suggest opting for softer, brighter, or warmer lip colors that add fullness and radiance. Shades like rose, peach, berry pink, and even a glossy nude can help reflect light, making the lips look plumper and the complexion more youthful overall.

The bottom line
While dark lipstick may feel chic and edgy, it’s often not the most flattering choice for older women. If your goal is to highlight your natural beauty and achieve a fresher, more vibrant look, lighter lipstick shades are the way to go.
