Short hair is a vibe. The right short haircut for your face shape and facial features can make you feel and look like a different, fresher, and more confident version of you (in all the best ways possible). But, as is always the case with hair, the wrong cutting technique or shape can put the emphasis on thin or fine strands and not make the most of your best features. And some short haircuts and hairstyles, more than others, are more difficult to pull off, not matter your age or hair type.

In order to avoid leaving the salon with a haircut you hate, have those hard conversations with your stylist before you get your hair washed, conditioned, and snipped and styled. Explain your biggest hair concerns and goals, and discuss whether certain cuts, such as those that are blunt and lack layers, are the best options for your hair if (for example) it is on the thinner side.

There are no haircuts that are universally “unflattering.” Someone’s worst haircut is another person’s signature hairstyle that suits them. But, generally speaking, these three short haircuts are considered among those that may add years to your look. If that’s something that you want to avoid, it may be best to skip over these short hairstyles.

1. Short Blunt Bob

It may sound contradictory because the bob is one of the most flattering haircut on so many women, but a specific bob style is a little harder to pull off if you have thin or flat hair. The very short (meaning: shorter than chin-length) bob with blunt ends and no layers may lack the movement and texture needed to keep thinner hair from looking completely flat and lifeless. While blunt ends can help make strands appear denser, and this is a good thing, if you find your hair appears too thin at the crown, consider adding invisible layers that boost your hair’s volume and make it look healthier.

2. Helmet-Style Pixie Haircut

The pixie haircut is one of the most versatile, despite what many may think about it. Gone are the days when every pixie was cut in a way that resembled a helmet — zero movement or texture. Today’s pixies are a little longer on top, with softer pieces that can be texturized or swept to the side to provide face-framing. Here’s what they aren’t: old-fashioned and stiff — which isn’t a fresh look.

3. Short Crops With No Volume or Layers

There’s an idea sometimes that a short crop doesn’t require additional layering — because there’s very little to layer. The problem with this mentality is that it often leaves hair looking shapeless. Your hair may appear to lack volume without any layering whatsoever, so one of the biggest and freshest changes you can often make isn’t completely changing up your haircut or going shorter in length, but adding face-framing layering or light layering all around that gives your hair lift.
