These days, more and more corporations are making an effort to be more eco-friendly—whether that’s because they actually care about the environment, or because they know consumers do. In many cases, that means switching up the type of packaging used for products. However, as one Redditor recently pointed out with a post in the r/Anticonsumption subreddit, Walmart seems to be taking a few steps back in this department by switching from cardboard to plastic. On top of unexpected self-checkout charges and many other grievances, this is just one more reason that people are upset with the superstore. Find all of the details below.
Walmart swaps cardboard pasta boxes for plastic
Earlier this year, one Walmart shopper noticed a difference in the packaging of Great Value's pasta—and they didn't like what they saw. Unfortunately, while Great Value pasta has previously been sold in recylcable cardboard boxes, the new packaging is plastic, which is worse for the environment.
The shopper took to Reddit to share their disappointment. "Walmart is slowly swapping from cardboard to plastic packaging with their pasta," they wrote.
Commenters were upset, too. "We are heading in the wrong direction," one wrote.
"You would hope the swap would be the other way," another agreed.
It's understandable why eco-conscious people would be troubled by this change. Cardboard is fully recyclable. Plastic, on the other hand, harms the environment not only when it's produced, but also after it's used. Plastic bags are oftentimes not recyclable, are non-degradable, and are even a major polluter.
"Plastic never degrades, so buying the pasta now results in permanent pollution," one comment explained.
One person pointed out that this change is "probably the result of a supplier switch," while another user, who works in packaging, noted that "intermittent paper shortages" have caused many brands to make the switch to plastic.

However, one person joked of another possible explanation: "It's so they can swap back to cardboard next year and market it as 'New sustainable packaging!' in giant green letters with a 'We care about the planet' lie stapled to it." Burn!
It seems people are always finding something to be mad at Walmart about—even their own employees have slammed the training process.
While this change in packaging may be disheartening, it's important to remember that there are still alternative options. A Redditor offered good advice for anyone looking to cut back on their plastic (and even paper) consumption: "If you can find a local bulk goods shop, or a grocery with bulk goods you can often find pasta in bulk. No package necessary," the wrote. Noted!
And if you need another reason to avoid this superstore, just wait 'till you hear about the self-checkout scams that have been occurring. We'll definitely be looking into some bulk goods stores!
