If you’re looking to order a custom sheet cake from Walmart for an upcoming celebration, keep an eye on your receipt—the retailer just added a sneaky new surcharge to their popular bakery offering that may increase your expected total.
While there are no extra charges for the kind of cake, icing, or color and design personalization, one unseen customization will cost you extra: the filling.

Walmart Sheet Cake Fee Charges Extra For Fillings
For many families, this is the time of year where celebratory occasions really pile up—graduations, birthdays, Mother's and Father's Days, weddings—and, of course, it's traditional to mark these festivities with a cake. But if you're ordering yours from Walmart, it'll cost you extra to add in some extra flavor.
The Walmart website offers customized build-your-own sheet cakes, which can be ordered ahead of any big events. On the site you can select what size you need, from a 12-serving sheet cake for $10.98 to a 96-serving whopper at $49.96.
After choosing your size, you select from white, chocolate, yellow, and marble for your interior cake, all of which are part of the set initial price. But in step 3, things get a little more expensive.
If you would like a filling for your gateau instead of just plain cake, it'll cost you: both of the options, strawberry and Bavarian creme, are an extra $3. The only way to not incur a surcharge here is to order no filling at all.
Filling Surcharge The Only One On Sheet Cakes
Interestingly, the filling surcharge is the only possible added fee applied to the build-a-cake process. After choosing whether or not to add filling, you can choose your icing—buttercreme or whipped—any border designs you would like, decorations like flowers, balloons, and toppings (like sprinkles), and even a handwritten message on the cake of up to 50 characters max. All colors of designs and icings are also customizable from 11 options including pink, light blue, purple and yellow. None of these personalizations add on any fees to your cake—only fillings.
As an example, we were able to design a 24-serving sheet cake for a set price of $19.96, including yellow cake, light blue icing, a top and bottom border in orange, a balloon design, and a "Happy Birthday" message, all still totaling $19.96 (before tax). However, when we attempted to add strawberry filling, our order jumped up to $22.96 before tax.
