Sometimes your skin needs a little extra TLC. Everyone’s skin changes over time, which is why dermatologists suggest adjusting your skincare routine as you age to ensure that your skin is getting the nourishment it needs.

For most people, using a facial oil or serum is the key step in transforming their complexions. These powerful products are designed to deliver quality anti-aging ingredients straight to the cells, making concerns like dryness, dullness, and prominent lines worries of the past. “The main reason serums are able to do this, is because of what they do not contain,” says Kenneth How, a dermatologist at Wexler Dermatology in New York City. “In contrast to moisturizers, serums don’t contain air-tight, occlusive ingredients, which allow them to penetrate more deeply into the epidermis, carrying their active ingredients with them.” In fact, New York City-based dermatologist Ellen Marmur says that serums are the new moisturizers. “They are perfect for layering — like a primer on clean skin before makeup or sunscreen,” she adds.

When To Use A Facial Oil

Stuck on how to incorporate an anti-aging facial oil into your routine? Skincare experts say that it should be applied based on your skin’s needs. Their main function is to help build a resilient lipid barrier and some say that it’s best to apply a facial oil after your serums for an extra layer of hydration or antioxidants. Inas Anis, a nurse practitioner, esthetician, and anti-aging skin care specialist, tells Dermstore that facial oils “can be combined with other products to get enhanced effects,” pointing out that it’s best to pair a facial oil with a serum when you need to treat an issue. If hydration is your top concern, then Anis says your skin will benefit from mixing your facial oil and moisturizer together.

Dr. Alex Roher, MD of San Diego Botox Inc recommends using face oils two times a day in the morning and at night, making the oil the last step in your skincare routine at both times. Anis also suggests using face oil as a primer before applying makeup. To do this, just allow the oil to fully absorb before applying your makeup for a natural, glow.
