Whoopi Goldberg has never been afraid to speak her mind, and it’s gotten her both praise and backlash. As one of the hosts of The View, she is often discussing controversial topics, and this week’s conversation piece was in response to United States Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announcing her plans to detain people at the Super Bowl. Keep reading for more information.

Whoopi Goldberg's Super Bowl Plan

The hosts were discussing the response from conservatives after Bad Bunny was announced as the halftime performer when Whoopi made her suggestion. Joy Behar explained that Kristi Noem said she was going to attend the Super Bowl to "round up" any illegal immigrants that may be in attendance. In response, Whoopi suggested, "Everybody get a little cocoa butter" and "sit in the sun" and "give yourself a Latin accent."

"And just see if she can tell who's who," she finished, as her co-hosts clapped and laughed. Joy went on to compare Whoopi's idea to the legend that Denmark's King Christian X fought back against the Nazis by wearing a yellow star himself, and all the Danes followed suit, so Nazis couldn't identify who was truly Jewish.

Social Media Reactions

Reactions to Whoopi's suggestion were pretty mixed across social media. While some people applauded her for standing up for a minority and for wanting to protect people from being detained by ICE, others thought the suggestion was racist.

"I know Whoopi has some outlandish ideas but this one isn't half bad," one person wrote.

"And that's on protecting communities in danger!" another person said. "Anyone who has a problem with this isn't understanding the bigger issue at hand."

Others accused Whoopi of encouraging blackface, with one user commenting, "So we're bringing back blackface now?" and another said, "Did she really just suggest everyone goes to the Super Bowl wearing blackface on live television?"
