A Doctor Says These Are The ‘Worst’ Foods To Start Your Day With That Harm Your ‘Gut Brain Connection’

Your diet is important to more than just your weight. What you eat first thing in the morning sets the tone for your energy, focus, and even your mood for the rest of the day. And according to Dr. Daniel Amen (@docamen on TikTok), a double board-certified psychiatrist and brain health expert, many of the most popular breakfast foods are sabotaging our gut and brain health.

In a recent video, Dr. Amen broke down the common breakfast choices that disrupt the gut-brain connection—a crucial relationship that affects everything from concentration to emotional well-being. He warns that sugar is the main culprit. Learn more below.

The Risk of Sugary Breakfasts

Sugar is undeniably delicious, and many of the most popular breakfast foods are loaded with it. But that great taste comes at a cost. "These are the worst foods to start your day," Dr. Amen warns, citing sugary and ultra-processed items like Pop-Tarts, donuts, sugary cereals, and pastries that spike blood sugar and leave your brain struggling to function. The result of starting your morning with a sugar overload is a short-lived energy rush followed by a crash that leaves you foggy, unfocused, and irritable.

While processed breakfasts might seem like quick and easy ways to fuel up, they can wreak havoc on your blood sugar. "Even foods that spike your blood sugar and then your pancreas sees it and 45 minutes later your brain is walking in mud," he explains. That mid-morning slump you feel is often your brain struggling to recover from a blood sugar crash.

He also calls out a common morning combo: sugar-heavy foods plus caffeine. It might feel energizing in the moment, but it can leave your brain more drained in the long run.

In general, too much sugar in the morning is a bad idea. "Think about this. This is what we do to kids. We give them something quick—sugar, cereal, plus orange juice," Dr. Amen says. "And it spikes their blood sugar, then they go to school, they can’t think because their brain is in mud, and focus, they can’t."

In place of sugar, remember to prioritize high-protein, truly energizing breakfasts. "Why don’t you give them eggs in the morning instead?" Dr. Amen concludes.
