If you can’t get through your morning without a cup of coffee, you’re certainly not alone. In fact, 3 in 4 Americans drink coffee on a daily basis. But it’s important to consider how your coffee habits could be impacting your health. While common health risks linked to excessive coffee consumption include anxiety and heart issues, there are also a few coffee habits that might be standing between you and your weight loss goals.

If you’re trying to lose weight, you’re probably aware of the role that the foods you eat play in your progress. But what about the coffee you drink? To shed some light on a few common coffee mistakes that could lead to inflammation and weight gain, we spoke to dietitian Krutika Nanavati. She told us that adding sugary ingredients to your coffee and even using coffee as a meal replacement are two major pitfalls to avoid. Learn about the risks of each below.

1. Loading your coffee with sugary ingredients

Indulging in a sugary coffee concoction might seem like a delightful way to start your day, but unfortunately, the reality isn't as sweet as it tastes. If you're accustomed to enhancing your coffee with copious amounts of sugar, flavored syrups, or whipped cream, you might be unknowingly contributing to more than just a pleasing taste.

In the realm of health, this sweet habit can spell trouble for your waistline, warns Nanavati. It shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that consuming too much sugar can lead to a range of health issues, including inflammation and weight gain. "Adding sugar, flavored syrups, or whipped cream to your coffee can significantly increase the calorie content," Nanavati cautions. These extra calories offer no nutritional benefit and may pave the way for weight gain.

Fortunately, there are alternative routes to sweetness that don't involve refined sugar. "Instead, try using natural sweeteners like honey or stevia, or better yet, enjoy your coffee black," suggests Nanavati. An additional metabolism-friendly option includes a sprinkle of cinnamon, a flavorful choice that won't compromise your health goals. Embrace the alternatives; your waistline will thank you.

2. Replacing breakfast with coffee

For those rushing through the morning hustle, the temptation to replace a wholesome breakfast with a quick cup of coffee can be alluring. But as convenient as this shortcut may seem, Nanavati cautions against making coffee a regular stand-in for the most important meal of the day.

"Many people replace their morning meal with coffee, which can be detrimental to metabolic health," Nanavati notes. "Breakfast is vital to kickstart your metabolism and provide energy for the day." Skipping breakfast is a habit that has even been linked to chronic inflammation. So if you're aiming to maintain a fit body and overall well-being, skipping breakfast in favor of coffee is a decision that may backfire.

While time constraints may occasionally force a coffee-only start to your day, Nanavati advises against making it a habit. "Try a balanced breakfast smoothie or a piece of fruit with some nuts alongside your coffee," she recommends. Incorporating nutritious foods into your morning routine is one of the best ways to aid weight management. So, even on the busiest mornings, spare a moment for a balanced breakfast to set the right tone for the day ahead.
