These 5 Items At Costco Actually Aren’t A Good Deal–Get Them At Other Stores Instead!

Most of the time, Costco has the best deals around. However, that isn’t always the case. In fact, there are a few products that you’re likely better off avoiding—whether that’s because they won’t actually save you money compared to options at other stores or because the bulk sizes are too large for the average person to finish before the expiration date.

Below, we’re rounding up a few Costco items you might want to leave out of your cart, from supplements to books.

1. Over-the-counter medications and supplements

Whether you want to stock up on probiotics for a healthier gut or just need to replenish your ibuprofen supply, you may feel inclined to buy big bottles of over-the-counter medications and supplements from Costco to save a few bucks. However, it's important to remember that even pills and capsules can expire. If you're not going to be taking a particular supplement on a daily basis, it's probably not a good idea to buy it in bulk, as it may reach its expiration date before you reach the bottom of the Costco-sized bottle.

2. Condiments

Condiments like ketchup, mayo, mustard, and ranch are common staples in many households. For this reason, you may find yourself reaching for big bottles of these sauces on your Costco trips. But remember that your super-sized ranch won't stay fresh forever! In addition to expiring after a certain amount of time (mayo lasts 6 months, for example), condiments will oftentimes lose flavor after a while. It may just be better to stick to regular-sized bottles. (And remember that consuming excessive amounts of certain sauces can result in health issues).

3. Books

If you're a bookworm like us, you likely make a beeline for the book section at every store you step into. However, while it's always great to browse, it may not be worth it to drop money on books from Costco. That's because you'll likely find better deals (and newer titles) elsewhere. Plus, it's always good to support your local bookstore!

costco ground coffee

4. Ground coffee

Anyone who guzzles down multiple cups of coffee a day may feel tempted to grab an ultra-large container of the stuff from Costco. But while we don't doubt that you'll make your way through Costco coffee, it may not taste the best the whole time. That's because ground coffee beans lose strength and flavor quickly. So by the time you get to the bottom of the tin, it probably won't taste as great (or give you the same buzz) as if you bought a smaller amount or invested in whole beans.

5. Produce

Those huge bags of apples can seem tempting when you're craving something crunchy, but unless you're baking a pie or two in the near future, they're likely to go bad before you finish them. The same can be said for all the fruits and vegetables at Costco; the portions are just too dang large for many of us to eat in time. Of course, if you have a large family to feed or are cooking a big meal for friends and family, by all means, take advantage of the deal. Just don't be surprised if you're single and you can't make it through all of those veggies before they spoil.
