It’s finally the weekend, which for many means cracking open a beer or de-corking a wine and pouring a big class to celebrate that you survived the week. But health experts warn that certain alcoholic drinks can seriously hinder your weight loss progress.

Alcoholic Beverages And Weight Loss

If you’re trying to shed a few pounds or stay on track with your weight loss progress, you might want to reconsider drinking alcohol regularly in the evenings, experts warn. Think twice about chugging that next bottle of beer or sipping on that second glass of wine.

“Alcoholic beverages are often consumed in the evenings, but most should be avoided because of the impact on weight gain,” Lisa Richards, certified nutritional coach and creator of The Candida Diet, explains. Here’s why:

High-Sugar Content

“Sugar-laden alcoholic beverages are a must to avoid in the evenings due to the added sugar and calories they contain,” Lisa explains.

“Alcohol converts into sugars that can offset many diet and macro plans,” Dr. Matt Chalmers, health and wellness expert, author and nutrition speaker, agrees. “It can also lead to a decrease in fat burning as the body looks at it as the most important chemical to break down.”

Possible Cause Of Slow Metabolism

Additionally, Chief Medical Officer of the Lindora Clinic and dietitian Dr. Amy Lee says,  "Alcohol of any potency contains alcohol." She continues, "The human body will always want to get rid of that chemical first by increasing the enzymes in the liver to metabolize it.  At the same time, the body is also smart enough to not get overworked, so some of the natural metabolic pathways would slow down, including ones that metabolize food." As a result, "people don’t burn fat or get into ketosis as readily when they drink alcohol."

Bad Food Choices

"It is best if none were consumed because alcohol lowers inhibitions which includes food choices," Lisa warns. "Many individuals make food choices they wouldn't otherwise if not consuming alcohol. These foods are often calorie dense foods that increase weight gain, inflammation, and water retention."

"Excess alcohol can radically increase unaccounted for calories and lead to snacking," Matt agrees.
