Bananas are often a go-to fruit for breakfast because of how convenient they are. But according to Daryl Gioffre, creator of the AlkaMind diet, bananas could actually be ruining your diet. “Bananas seem like the perfect option to grab and go in the morning, but with a closer look, you’ll find that bananas eaten alone aren’t the best option because they’re 25% sugar and moderately acidic,” he tells Byrdie.

You should be mindful of the acids and sugars in bananas because they could cause a spike in your blood sugar, which can lead to unhealthy cravings, fatigue, weight gain and inflammation. “Without balancing this banana breakfast with a healthy fat, many of banana’s benefits are lost, while spikes in blood sugar and acid are gained,” he says. “They’ll give you a quick boost, but you’ll soon be tired and feeling hungry.”

Interesting… If you can’t give up your morning banana, Dr. Gioffre suggests pairing them with a healthy fat or spice to help neutralize the acids and prevent an insulin spike from the sugar. This will also help your body get the potassium, fiber and magnesium from the fruit, too! He recommends having it with raw almond butter, chia, hemp, flax, coconut oil, cinnamon or turmeric.
