Healthy, luscious hair starts with more than just regular trims and a good shampoo—it begins with knowing what’s in your products. While many hair care ingredients promise shine, smoothness, or long-lasting style, some may actually be harming your strands. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Anna Chacon highlights two common culprits that can weaken hair and contribute to fallout.

1. Parabens

Parabens are widely used as preservatives in cosmetic products to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mold. But while they protect the product, they may not be so kind to your hair.

"Often used as preservatives in cosmetic goods are compounds called parabens. To stop the growth of dangerous bacteria and mold, they are used in cosmetics," Chacon notes. "Parabens, however, have the potential to interfere with the hormonal system's regular operation in both men and women, which could promote hair loss."

If hair shedding is a concern, checking ingredient labels and opting for paraben-free formulas may be a safer choice.

2. Silicones

Silicones, such as dimethicone, are popular for giving hair a silky, smooth finish, but they can also build up over time. This buildup can suffocate the scalp and hair shaft, potentially weakening strands and increasing breakage.

"Hair loss may result from the accumulation of this silicone-based component. Water is repelled by silicone by its very nature," Chacon adds. "In order to give hair a smooth, silky appearance, dimethicone is also utilized to coat cuticles and trap moisture."

Switching to silicone-free or lighter formulations can help maintain healthy hair hydration and reduce buildup-related damage.

The Bottom Line

For hair that’s strong, shiny, and resilient, it’s worth taking a closer look at the ingredients in your daily products. Avoiding parabens and heavy silicones, as dermatologists suggest, can help prevent unnecessary hair fallout and keep your strands looking their best.
