We spoke with Krutika Nanavati, a registered dietitian and nutritionist, to learn about the one high-sodium soup ingredient that could wreak havoc on your waistline and overall health. Nanavati revealed that bouillon cubes are the surprising culprit that should be replaced with something healthier due to it’s high-sodium content.

Bouillon Cubes

Bouillon cubes, those flavor-packed little blocks, are a convenient and quick way to enhance the taste of soups, stews, and various dishes. They add depth and richness to culinary creations, making them an appealing choice for busy cooks. However, their concentrated flavor often comes at a price, as many bouillon cubes are exceedingly high in sodium.

"The consumption of these cubes can contribute to weight gain and an expanded waistline. Sodium is known to cause water retention, resulting in bloating and increased waist size. Moreover, excessive sodium intake can lead to high blood pressure and other health complications," says Nanavati.

She also goes in depth behind the science of this waist-expanding ingredient and why it's important to opt for low-sodium alternatives for our health's sake.

"Sodium plays a vital role in maintaining fluid balance within our bodies. Our kidneys filter out excess sodium and ensure optimal levels in our bloodstream. However, excessive sodium consumption from sources like bouillon cubes can overwhelm our kidneys, leading to water retention beyond what is necessary. This can result in bloating, giving the illusion of a larger waistline," Nanavati elaborates.
