When it comes to healthy eating, most of us focus on the obvious culprits—fried foods, sugary snacks, and processed meals. But what about the condiments you drizzle, dip, or pour over your favorite dishes? According to nutrition experts, certain popular sauces may be doing more harm than good. Packed with hidden sugars, sodium, and additives, these everyday flavor boosters can quietly wreak havoc on your gut health and even contribute to weight gain. Here are four sauces experts say you should watch out for—and why they could be sabotaging your wellness goals.

1. Alfredo sauce

Alfredo sauce is one that can be bad for digestion because of its rich and heavy ingredients. It’s typically made with butter, cream, and cheese. This can especially cause problems for those with sensitive stomachs.

"Alfredo is full of cream, butter, and cheese, which can cause problems for people sensitive to lactose or those who struggle to digest high-fat foods. This combination can lead to bloating and that heavy, sluggish feeling," says Dr. Dr. Harsh Sheth.

2. Barbecue sauce

Many commercially-made barbecue sauces are packed with added sugars, often in the form of high fructose corn syrup (read about the downsides of HFCS here). Eating too much sugar can lead to bloating, gas, and other digestive issues that disrupt the balance of gut bacteria.

Dr. Sheth calls this sauce a "hidden sugar bomb" and adds, "Many store-bought barbecue sauces are full of sugar, which can cause bloating, gas, and discomfort by disrupting your gut’s natural balance. Sugar also causes rapid spikes in blood sugar, which may impact digestion."

3. Hot sauce

Most hot sauces contain vinegar or citrus flavorings, which are highly acidic. These ingredients can irritate the gut lining of the stomach, especially if you easily get acid reflux, heartburn, or gastritis.

Dr. Sheth elaborates on this and says, "Capsaicin, the compound that makes hot sauce spicy, can relax the muscles in your esophagus, leading to acid reflux. For some, too much hot sauce can also trigger cramps or diarrhea."

4. Ketchup With Added Sugar

Despite its seemingly innocuous presence, the excess sugar in ketchup can disrupt blood sugar levels and promote fat storage, particularly around the abdominal area. By cutting out ketchup with added sugar from one's diet, you can significantly reduce the daily sugar intake and mitigate the inflammatory response in your body.

“Most brands of ketchup provide 4 grams of added sugar in just one tablespoon of their product,” dietitian Trista Best says. “Knowing that multiple tablespoons of this condiment are used at a typical meal makes this number all the more alarming.”

It's not just inflammation and visceral fat that get impacted negatively; your gut also experiences the downsides. Best adds, “Gut health can begin to take a toll as a diet high in sugar promotes gut dysbiosis and an imbalance of gut bacteria."
