For many bulk shoppers, taking a trip to BJ’s Wholesale is somewhat of a magical experience. Warehouse club members love to snatch up bulk, low per-unit prices on a variety of items they need — and don’t need — because they just simply can’t resist the killer deal they’re receiving.

If you’re someone who goes through a lot of something, like paper towels or laundry detergent, shopping in larger quantities can make a lot of sense. However, just because BJ’s is offering a deal on a household item, doesn’t mean you always SHOULD buy it. In fact, there is one thing that you should avoid buying in bulk, at all costs, no matter how sweet the deal is.

Trust us, it is too good to pass up.

No matter who cheap the unit price is, a shopper expert cautions against buying perishable items in bulk from warehouse clubs like BJ’s. Why? The logic is quite simple.

Unless you have enough people in your household to consume a bulk unit of dairy, you won’t be able to finish the items before they go bad.

“Throwing away spoiled or expired goods is the same as tossing money in the trash,” warns Cameron Huddleston, Online Editor at Kiplinger.

If you think about how often a thing of yogurt or milk goes bad in your fridge because your family didn’t get around to eating or drinking it, just imagine how much would be left over if you had a massive quantity of it.

Not to mention if you purchase a bulk supply of any perishables, you have to have the space to store it. Unless you have an extra couple of refrigerators -- or five -- you might not even be able to fit it in your home.

Save the perishables for the regular grocery store and focus on more practical, cost-effective items from BJ's!
