1. Sunscreen is a Must

“Wear a sunscreen every day to protect your collagen,” says Dr. Sugai. He recommends a non-tinted formula to avoid staining clothes, and stresses covering both the face and neck generously. A larger bottle ensures you won’t skimp on coverage, which is key for preventing further damage.

2. Stop Smoking

Smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs—it accelerates neck aging. “It irreversibly damages your skin by activating enzymes that chew up collagen in your dermis,” explains Sugai. Quitting smoking is one of the most effective ways to preserve a youthful neck.

3. Retinoids at Night

Retinoids boost collagen production, but the neck can be sensitive. Start small: apply a half pea-sized amount at bedtime. Options include prescription retinoids, retinol with exfoliants, or gentle drugstore formulas.

4. Peptides for Sensitive Skin

If retinol irritates your neck, peptide-containing moisturizers and serums can be a gentler alternative. Sugai highlights brands like Paula’s Choice, Ulla Henrickson, or Cetaphil Peptides to help signal collagen production without irritation.

5. Consider Botox for Vertical Cords

Those vertical “Hulk muscle” platysma bands can be softened with Botox. Horizontal neck lines can also benefit from neuromodulators, giving your neck a smoother, more youthful appearance. Sugai advises discussing these treatments with a dermatologist to see what fits your needs.
